Wayanad, Feb 18 (Reporter) AICC leader and Wayanad Lok Sabha MP, Rahul Gandhi on Sunday urged the Kerala government to pay compensation immediately to the bereaved families of P Ajeesh (47) ,a farmer of Padamala who was crushed to death by a female wild elephant named "Belur Makhana" on February 10.
He also demanded immediate payment of commission and V P Paul (52) temporary watcher with forest department of Pakkam, who was trampled to death by a wild elephant at Cheriyanmala junction near Pulpally on Friday 16.
Addressing a press conference after the assessment and review meeting with district authorities at PWD rest house, Kalpetta, Gandhi said "The administration should speed up the process to provide compensation to the victims' families, while considering they lost their bread winners, so poor families will be affected directly and they need the money immediately ,so not delayed for a month".
He also said, a warning system should be set up immediately and one team of Rapid Response Team (RRT) is not enough to settle the Animal-human conflict in the district. He said the number of RRTS should be increased and there should be coordination among Kerala, Karnataka and Tamilnadu.
Gandhi said "I did not understand why it is late for developing a proper medical college hospital in the district" .
It is the role of the government to expedite the matter by increasing the infrastructure facilities to provide better treatment to the people, he said. "I tried to call Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan this morning, but he was not available'. I want to appraise him directly on the issue".
To a question from media persons, Rahul Gandhi said "this is not a political meeting, I came here to act as part of a very important issue and I did not want to divert the attention for political gain, but only try to inform the administrative to understand them the people facing panic due to the wild animal's attack. I would request the government to act immediately".
In the morning, Gandhi visited the houses of P Ajeesh and interacted about 20 minutes with his parents Joseph and Elsi, wife Sheela and children Alna and Alen. He assured them all help and said "I am always with the people of Wayanad, so you can call me any time in case you need a help ".
Ajeesh's daughter Alen told media persons, after Gandhi's visit that his father would have been saved had he been given timely medical attention.
Gandhi then headed to the houses of VP Paul and Prajjesh at Modakolli near Sulthan Bathery. Prajesh was killed in a tiger attack on December 9, 2023. AICC organising General secretary K C Venugopal, MLAs T Sidhik, IC Balakrishnan also accompanied him.
Gandhi arrived at Kannur international Airport on Saturday night, after temporarily cancelling his "Bharat Jodo Nyaya yathra" at Varanasi, and left for Ahmedabad from Kannur Airport, on Sunday...////...
