Punjab: Police bust extortion racket, recover Rs 83 lakh cash, and illegal weapons

Chandigarh, Feb 23 (Reporter) In a major breakthrough Batala police busts a major extortion racket run by USA based Gurdev Jassal and apprehend two persons, said Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav on X (Twitter) on Sunday. He said that the preliminary investigation revealed that , on February 4, associates of Jassal fired on petrol pump of Kalanaur based businessman. After continuous threat calls and demand of Rs 1 crore the businessman eventually paid Rs 50 lacs on 11 February. DGP Yadav said acting on investigation, ASI Surjit Singh and Ankus Maini were arrested for their involvement in the collection and distribution of extortion funds. He said Jassal’s gang used foreign numbers for threats and coordinate payments, ensuring that the extortion funds were routed through multiple intermediaries.
