Chandigarh, July 22 (Reporter) Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann visited the Golden Temple in Amritsar today, marking his first visit to the shrine since it began receiving a series of threatening emails.
During his visit, Mann offered prayers at the holy site and reviewed the security arrangements in place. The visit follows growing criticism from opposition leaders over his delayed response to the threats, which first surfaced on July 14. Emails threatening to blow up Amritsar International Airport were also received.
Since the threats emerged, senior Congress and BJP leaders have already visited the Golden Temple, questioning the Chief Minister’s absence.
BJP co-incharge Ashwani Sharma accused the Mann-led government of negligence, claiming that it waited three days before taking the threats seriously. Congress MLA Partap Singh Bajwa also slammed the Chief Minister for not responding swiftly.
The Golden Temple received its seventh threat email on July 17, further intensifying concern among devotees and authorities.
Speaking to the media, former Akal Takht Jathedar and current Head Granthi Giani Raghbir Singh voiced serious concern over the government's inaction. He said that despite multiple threats, no official communication had been made with the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC).
Describing the threats as part of a “larger conspiracy,” Giani Raghbir Singh noted that even though two suspects were arrested on Sunday, the emails have continued, spreading fear among pilgrims. He emphasized that while the shrine’s internal administration is capable of managing security, it is the government’s duty to prevent external threats and maintain peace.
He also condemned Congress MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla’s recent letter to the Centre requesting CISF deployment at the shrine, calling it “highly condemnable” in light of the Congress party’s role in the 1984 military assault on Sikh religious institutions.
Giani Raghbir urged political parties to stop politicizing the issue and instead work together to ensure justice and security. He called on the Chief Minister to engage directly with the SGPC and take the threats more seriously...////...
