Srinagar, Dec 20 (Reporter) Hurriyat Conference Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Friday alleged that he was placed under house arrest and prevented from offering congregational prayers at the Jamia Masjid for the third consecutive week.
Mirwaiz, who also serves as Kashmir's Chief cleric, claimed he was barred from attending Friday prayers at the Jamia Masjid in the old city.
“Again prevented from going to #JamaMasjid for third consecutive Friday. Despite the bone chilling cold thousands of faithful-the elderly, women, physically challenged, children, and people from all over the valley gather, waiting expectantly with a lot of affection and devotion to listen to the word of God at the Grand Mosque,” Mirwaiz said in a post on X.
“What hurt and disappointment it brings to them all when those in power assert brute force and detain me, totally impervious and heartless to the grief they cause to them, to me, and the Muslims of the valley,” he added.
There was no official word from civil or police authorities on Mirwaiz’s house detention claim.
Meanwhile, Anjuman Auqaf Jama Masjid Srinagar denounced the “continuous house detention” of its head and Mirwaiz by the authorities for the third consecutive Friday.
In a statement, the Auqaf said that the administration imposes “arbitrary and unjustified restrictions” on the religious functioning of Mirwaiz.
The Auqaf lamented that the LG Administration, through these “arbitrary measures” continuously disregards and disrespects the religious sentiments and emotions of the people.
“Such measures also amount to interference in religious affairs of Muslims which is highly condemnable,” the statement added...////...
