President Murmu, Portuguese President launch postage stamps marking 50 years of diplomatic ties

Lisbon/New Delhi, Apr 7 (Reporter) President Droupadi Murmu, who is on a two-day state visit to Portugal, on Monday held talks with President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and the two leaders also graced the launch of postage stamps commemorating 50 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The President’s House said in posts on X: “President Droupadi Murmu held extensive discussions with President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa of Portugal. The two leaders discussed various aspects of India-Portugal relations, as well as global and regional issues of shared interest. “Both leaders agreed that the bilateral relationship is based on mutual trust, understanding and cooperation on important issues, including at the multilateral level. They agreed to further strengthen the long-standing ties in several areas including trade and investment, IT, renewable energy and connectivity. “President Droupadi Murmu and President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa of Portugal graced the launch of postage stamps commemorating 50 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries. “The stamps reflect the rich artistic and cultural heritage of India and Portugal, and feature vibrant folk attire from both countries: Rajasthan's distinctive Kalbeliya costume, and the traditional Viana do Castelo dress from Portugal.” The MEA spokesperson said on X: “Further strengthening our special relationship. “President Droupadi Murmu @rashtrapatibhvn held productive talks with President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa of Portugal. “Both leaders discussed ways to further strengthen cooperation in the field of trade & commerce, culture, tourism & people to people ties. They also engaged to enhance partnership in new and upcoming areas including IT, renewable energy, green hydrogen, start-up, innovation and skilled mobility.” Earlier in the day, President Murmu was warmly welcomed by President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, and accorded a Guard of Honour at the historic ‘Praca do Imperio’ in Lisbon. Later, President Murmu visited the Church of Santa Maria and laid a wreath at the tomb of Luis Vaz de Camoes – the national poet of Portugal. She also visited the Monastery of Jerónimos – a masterpiece of 16th-century architecture in Portugal. President Murmu arrived in Lisbon on Sunday night on a two-day state visit. The presidential visit is taking place after a gap of 27 years. The last State Visit from India took place in 1998 when President K. R. Narayanan visited Portugal. India and Portugal share historic and friendly bilateral ties which have evolved over the years into a modern, multifaceted, and dynamic partnership, characterised by robust growth and expansion across several areas of cooperation.
