Kolkata, Feb 20 (Reporter) Tension triggered on Tuesday when police intercepted Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari and CPI (M) leader Brinda Karat on their way to Sandeshkhali, a day after Calcutta High Court granted permission for Adhikari's visit, where Section 144 CR PC was not extended by the North 24 Parganas district administration.
Official sources revealed that fresh prohibitory orders were invoked in at least nine locations from 9 a.m. onwards. West Bengal Police erected three-tier barricades at Dhamakhali, a mere three km away from the trouble spot where allegations of torture by TMC leaders and forceful land acquisition from poor tribal people have surfaced.
Despite Calcutta High Court's permission, Adhikari expressed frustration with the police's refusal to allow his visit, stating, "Police are not listening to the Calcutta High Court directive even though the Judge allowed him to visit, provided he should abide by the prohibitory orders."
Adhikari, wearing a black badge to protest journalist Santu Pan's arrest, plans to wait for police permission before visiting the city, or return to seek judicial redressal if the police do not allow his visit.
The BJP leader asserted that the police cited the fresh imposition of prohibitory orders at nine locations as the reason for the halt. Adhikari anticipates the state government moving to a division bench to challenge the single-judge bench order of Justice Kaushik Chanda, who allowed him to visit Sandeshkhali.
Additionally, BJP MLAs Shankar Ghosh and Agnimitra Paul were also stopped by the police at Dhamakhali.
Notably, police also intercepted CPI (M) veteran leader Brinda Karat, preventing her from proceeding further into the troubled area. Karat condemned the government's actions, stating, "This is an unprecedented move by a government headed by a woman, curtailing the democratic rights of the people."
She accused the TMC government of protecting the alleged mastermind of the crime, Sahjahan Sheikh, and raised concerns about the safety of women in the state, alleging that they were being molested while the perpetrators went unpunished.
As the political drama unfolds, the state awaits further developments, with Adhikari hinting at potential legal recourse and the opposition expressing discontent with the government's handling of the situation...////...
