Police constable of Tripura cyber-crime in police remand for defrauding bank accounts

Agartala, Feb 27 (Reporter) A local court in Tripura’s Gomati district on Wednesday sent a constable to three days police remand who was arrested in connection with defrauding Rs 82 Lakh from different bank accounts in HDFC bank in Udaipur branch few days ago. Earlier, police arrested the bank’s deputy manager Abhishek Sarkar and based on his statement police on Tuesday arrested a constable dealing with cyber-crime in R K Pur police station Jayanta Saha. SDPO Udaipur Nirman Das said that three customers of the bank - Niyati Sarkar, Suniti Dutta Sen and Lopamudra Homroy lodged complaints of unauthorized withdrawal of their fixed deposits from the bank before maturity. The initial investigation revealed that Deputy Bank Manager Sarkar and Constable Saha had misappropriated money to several bank accounts over the last few months and recently the matter was brought to the notice when a complaint of losing Rs 18 lakh from the account of Suniti Dutta Sen, an elderly retired government teacher. The victim had accused bank officials of fraudulently withdrawing whole money from her fixed deposits. She had 11 fixed deposits in the branch, with the first one set to mature on January 6, 2025. When she visited the bank to claim the matured amount on January 7, Sen was asked to come the next day. She was shocked on January 8, to learn from the bank manager that her fixed deposits had been prematurely withdrawn without her consent. She requested a detailed transaction history, and on January 10, the bank provided a statement for an account that she had never opened. The investigation revealed that a fraudulent account had been created in her name without her knowledge, linked to mobile numbers that did not belong to her. Through this fake account, all 11 of her fixed deposits were liquidated, and the entire money was siphoned off. Sen further alleged despite multiple attempts to get answers from the bank, the manager allegedly evaded responsibility.
