Bandar Seri Begawan/New Delhi, Sep 3 (Reporter) Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who arrived in Brunei earlier Tuesday on a two-day official visit, inaugurated the new Chancery building of the Indian High Commission and said it was indicative of India’s stronger ties with Brunei Darussalam and would also serve the diaspora.
The PM's visit is the first ever bilateral visit by an Indian PM to the Southeast Asian sultanate.
In a post on X, the PM said:
“Delighted to inaugurate the new Chancery of the High Commission of India, indicative of our stronger ties with Brunei Darussalam. This will also be serving our diaspora.”
The pictures showed Prime Minister Modi lighting the lamp at the new chancery building, accompanied by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, NSA Ajit Doval and Secretary East Jaideep Mazumdar.
The MEA spokesperson in a post on X said:
“Reinforcing India-Brunei ties.
“PM @narendramodi inaugurated the Chancery building of Indian High Commission in Bandar Seri Begawan by unveiling a commemorative plaque.
“PM interacted with the members of vibrant Indian diaspora in Brunei, who were part of the ceremony and conveyed appreciation for their contribution as a living bridge between the two nations.”
A statement said that Prime Minister Modi lighted a lamp and unveiled a plaque on the occasion.
Prime Minister also interacted with the Indian community members who were present at the inauguration. He appreciated their contribution as a living bridge between the two countries and strengthening bilateral ties. The first phase of Indians arriving in Brunei started with the discovery of oil in the 1920s. Currently, approximately 14,000 Indians are residing in Brunei. The contribution of Indian doctors and teachers to the growth and development of Brunei’s health care and education sectors has been well acknowledged.
The chancery complex embodies a profound sense of Indianness, masterfully integrating traditional motifs and lush tree plantations. The use of elegant claddings and durable Kota stones further enhances its aesthetic appeal, harmoniously blending classic and contemporary elements.
