Chennai, Dec 3 (Reporter) Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister
M K Stalin and ascertained the damages caused by Cyclone Fengal in the state.
During the telephonic talk, Mr Stalin explained the rescue, relief and rehabilitation works
carried out by the ruling DMK in Cyclone hit areas.
Mr Stalin also cited the letter written to him and requested him to depute a Central team to
assess the damages caused by the Cyclone fury and provide assistance sought by the State .
Mr Modi assured the Chief Minister that the State's request would be considered immediately
and necessary steps would be taken.
It may be recalled that in a letter to Mr Modi last night, Mr Stalin sought immediate release of
Rs 2,000 crore NDRF funds as the state has estimated the damages at Rs 2,475 crore.
He also urged Mr Modi to depute a Central Team at the earlier to comprehensively asses the damages caused by the Cyclone Fury in the affected districts and sanction more funds based
on its report.
In the letter, Mr Stalin said the catastrophic event has resulted in loss of 12 human lives,
2,416 huts, 721 houses and 963 cattle, inundated 2,11,139 hectares of agricultural and
horticultural lands, caused damages to 9,576 km of roads, 1,847 culverts and 417 tanks,
destructing 1,649 km of electric conductors, 23,664 electric poles and 997 transformers,
besides causing severe impairment to 1,650 Panchayat buildings, 4,269 Anganwadi
Centers, 205 Primary Health Centers, 5,936 school buildings, 381 community halls and
623 water supply schemes.
Mr Stalin said the State Government has carried out an initial assessment of these
damages and estimated that Rs. 2,475 crores is required for temporary restoration
efforts in Cyclone hit 14 districts of the State...////...
