Platense beats Huracan to clinch first Argentine top flight crown

Buenos Aires, June 2 (Reporter) Winger Guido Mainero scored in the second half as Platense secured its first ever Argentine top-flight title with a 1-0 victory over Huracan on Sunday. Platense took the lead just after the hour at Estadio Unico in Santiago del Estero when Huracan failed to deal with a floating Vicente Taborda free-kick and Mainero sent an acrobatic first-time effort in the far corner. Huracan controlled almost two thirds of the total possession but lacked potency in attack as Platense edged to the most important victory in its 120-year history. "I couldn't believe it when I saw the ball go into the back of the net," Mainero told reporters after the match. "This is a deserving reward for all of the hard work that everyone at this club has put in. It's beautiful to now be a part of the club's history." The result means Platense will play in the Copa Libertadores, South America's top club competition, for the first time next year. It was just Huracan's fourth loss of the season and ended the club's bid for its first Primera Division title since 1973. "It makes us extremely sad and right now it's hard to analyze what happened," Huracan manager Frank Kudelka said. "But we should be happy to have made it this far.
