Srinagar, Nov 8 (Reporter) Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday defended the resolution that was passed by the Assembly which sought restoration of Special Status for Jammu & Kashmir.
Omar said the passing of resolution was historic and after its passage people of J&K have found their voice.
Speaking during the motion of thanks to the Lieutenant Governor’s address, the Chief Minister said the resolution reflects the will of the people while avoiding outright rejection by the central government.
"We chose our words carefully to keep dialogue open with any future government. This resolution has given people a glimmer of hope," he said.
“..To get such a resolution passed by this House, through which people's emotions can be translated, so that the world knows that in the decision of August 5, 2019, our opinion was not taken, our consent was not included in it, and we want Jammu and Kashmir to get its Special Status back, and that resolution should not be rejected by the centre immediately. I say, what more proof of wisdom do you need?” Omar said.
Without naming Peoples Democratic Party and Peoples Conference who have been terming the resolution as weak, he said had the ruling dispensation brought a resolution, which would have been rejected quickly, the people who made commotions would have said, look, this House has no meaning.
The Chief Minister said that had this resolution been weak or diluted, the Prime Minister wouldn’t mention it in his speeches.
“..There is something in this resolution, that even today in speeches, Honorable Home Minister of India, Honorable Prime Minister of India, and other senior ministers of the Government of India, are talking about this resolution and targeting us,” he said. “If this would have been a compromise, if it would have been weak, if nothing would have happened in it then this resolution would not have been mentioned anywhere. They would have remained silent. This is the proof that the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly has passed a historic resolution. "
Omar said they don’t have high expectations from the current central government.
“This Government won’t remain the same forever. Tomorrow, there will be a change. The system will change at some point. So why should we lock ourselves in a circle and say that this is all we ask from you. We will not ask for more than this…. It is possible that tomorrow someone else will be sitting here and the central government will be changed. For them, it will be easier to jog a road map, to advance a dialogue process. It would have been easier if we had locked ourselves in a circle,” he said.
The CM noted that "people have regained their voice and can now speak freely. We felt stifled and unable to express ourselves, but this resolution has encouraged people to talk and debate openly."
The BJP legislators boycotted the final day of the session, opposing the resolution for dialogue over special status . Earlier the day, the J & K Assembly witnessed uproar.
As the session commenced on Friday morning, Peoples Democratic Party legislator Fayaz Mir attempted to display a banner in support of Article 370. People's Conference MLA Sajad Lone and AIP's Sheikh Khursheed backed the move, sparking protests from BJP lawmakers. In the ensuing pandemonium, Khursheed was marshalled out of the House. BJP lawmakers continued their protest against the special status resolution. As some BJP members attempted to storm the well, they were marshalled out of the House. The remaining BJP legislators staged a walkout.
The House later ran smoothly. Late in the evening the Assembly was adjourned sine die...////...
