Panama City, May 23 (Reporter) The Civil Aeronautical Authority of Panama (AAC) announced on Thursday the resumption of commercial flights between Panama and Venezuela, ending a 10-month suspension that had disrupted air connectivity between the two nations.
In an official statement, the AAC confirmed that the reactivation of services would proceed under “the principle of reciprocity,” meaning that both countries will allow their respective airlines to operate routes equally. “In addition, it should be noted that the reactivation of air operations will be carried out in accordance with the technical capacity of the operators of both countries,” the statement added.
The AAC also reaffirmed Panama’s commitment to international aviation norms, saying it “supports commercial air transportation globally under an open skies policy and welcomes the resumption of flights between both nations, which will help strengthen global air connectivity.”
The restoration of flights follows months of diplomatic negotiations after Panama suspended operations in mid-2023, citing administrative and regulatory issues. Venezuela had responded with its own flight ban, resulting in a complete halt to direct air travel between the two countries.
Before the suspension, flights between Panama City and Caracas served as a key link for business, tourism, and transit in the region, particularly as Panama’s Tocumen International Airport functions as a major hub for travel across Latin America. The interruption had left thousands of travellers relying on indirect routes and facing increased travel costs.
A timeline for the full restoration of airline schedules has yet to be announced, but both governments have indicated that services will resume gradually based on logistical readiness and regulatory compliance...////...
