Pakistan set to host SCO Summit, four-member delegation arrives from India

Islamabad, Oct 14 (Reporter) Pakistan is all set to host the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Islamabad from Tuesday with foreign delegations arriving, including a four-member delegation from India, in the federal capital. A 76-member Russian delegation and seven representatives of the SCO reached Pakistan. A four-member official delegation from India arrived in Pakistan on Sunday, Ary News reported. A 15-member delegation from China, a four-member delegation from Kyrgyzstan and a two-member delegation from Iran also reached Islamabad for SCO summit. Pakistan has implemented stringent security measures for the summit, with the law enforcers taking responsibility for the safety of foreign delegations, supported by heavy police deployments across the capital. The metro bus service in Islamabad and Rawalpindi will remain suspended during the summit, and the government has announced a three-day holiday for public offices, educational institutions, and commercial centers in Islamabad. As part of these security measures, all wedding halls, snooker clubs, business centers, gyms, and other crowded markets along the routes of the foreign dignitaries' movements will be closed from October 12 to 16. The opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has announced plans to stage a protest in Islamabad on October 15, adding a layer of complexity to the event’s security and traffic arrangements. The Pakistan Foreign Office said that the member states will be represented by the prime ministers of China, Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan as well as the first vice president of Iran and the External Affairs Minister of India S Jaishankar. The prime minister of Mongolia (observer state), along with the deputy chairman of the cabinet of ministers and the foreign minister of Turkmenistan (special guest), will also take part in the meeting. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will preside over the SCO summit in his capacity as the current chair of the CHG. Extraordinary security measures have been finalized for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, in collaboration with multiple agencies, including the Army, Rangers, Frontier Corps, and provincial police, officials said on Sunday. Business owners near the routes of the foreign delegates had been asked to submit surety bonds to prevent any suspicious individuals from finding refuge in these establishments. Police sources said steps were taken to ensure safe passage from Nur Khan Airbase and Islamabad Airport to the federal capital. Sources told The Express Tribune that comprehensive security arrangements had been put in place for the high-level SCO summit.
