Hobart, Jan 27 (Reporter) Mitch Owen’s blistering century paved the way for the Hobart Hurricanes to claim their maiden KFC Big Bash League (BBL) title, defeating Sydney Thunder by seven wickets in a historic final at Ninja Stadium here on Monday. Owen smashed an explosive 108 off just 42 balls, matching the record for the fastest century in BBL history with a 39-ball knock, an achievement shared with Craig Simmons. The 15,706-strong spectators was treated to an unforgettable display as Owen blasted 11 sixes, setting a new benchmark for power-hitting in the BBL. His 16-ball half-century also created a new club record for the fastest fifty in a BBL Final, providing the Hurricanes with a dominant platform to chase down Sydney Thunder’s total of 7-182. Owen’s fireworks were crucial in Hobart's pursuit, with the Hurricanes racing to 0-74 in the Powerplay—setting a new league record and surpassing Thunder’s 0-40 in the opening six overs. Sydney Thunder had earlier set the tone with a strong start, as openers David Warner (48) and Tanveer Sangha (49) put on 97 for the first wicket. However, key wickets from Nathan Ellis (3-23) and Riley Meredith (3-27) in the middle overs curtailed their progress, leaving Thunder unable to post a higher total. Wade (32* off 17) and McDermott (18* off 12) took Hobart across the line with 35 balls to spare, with McDermott striking the winning runs. The emotional victory was marked by captain Matthew Wade, who reflected on the long journey to the title and thanked the coaching staff for their support. This historic win makes Hobart the first team from Tasmania to win a Big Bash championship, with Melbourne Stars now the only team yet to claim the coveted title...////...
