Odisha records 60.55 percent voter turnout till 5 PM

Bhubaneswar, May 20 (Reporter) An approximate 60.55 percent voter turnout was recorded till 1700 hours in the polling held for five Lok Sabha and 35 Assembly constituencies in Odisha on Monday, Election Commission of India sources said. Around 60.55 percent of 79.62 lakh voters have exercised their franchise for the five Lok Sabha and 35 Assembly seats till 5 PM in the second phase of election in the state. Barring some sporadic minor incidents, the polling was by and large peaceful across eleven districts where the polling was going on smoothly, CEO Nikunja Bihari Dhal said. He said though an autorickshaw driver was stabbed to death in Bargarh but it was not related to the election. The murder was committed due to personal rivalry, Northern Range IG Himanshu Lal said. The BJP however, described the murder as a poll violence allegedly orchestrated by the BJD workers. ECI sources said the Bargarh Lok Sabha Constituency reported the highest voter turnout of 66.14 percent followed by Sundergarh (61.53 percent), Boangir (61.35 percent) and Kandhamal (57.47 percent). Aska Lok Sabha Constituency reported the lowest voter turnout of 55.65 percent. Among the 35 Assembly seats, Sonepur in the Bolangir Lok Sabha seat recorded the highest 71.35 percent votes followed by Bonai ( 68.85 percent) and Birmaharajpur (68.61 percent) under Sundargarh Lok Sabha seat. The Hinjili Assembly seat held by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik recorded 57.21 percent,the lowest among the seven assembly seats under the Aska Lok Sabha seat. On district wise voting, Ganjam district reported the lowest voter turnout of 54.81 percent till 1700 hours. The CEO said polling was stopped in booth No 28 in Kantamal due to some problems and action will be taken after a detailed report was received. While the voting was going on, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a massive roadshow in Puri and addressed two mega public meetings at Angul and Cuttack. Today’s polling will seal the fate of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik,who is contesting from both Hinjili and Kantabanji Assembly seats, his six council of ministers, two former union Ministers Jual Oram and Dillip Ray, four former Odisha ministers and several sitting MLAs. The polling will also decide the electoral fortunes of sitting MPs Jual Oram,(Sundargarh) Sangeeta Singdeo(Bolangir),both from BJP and Achyuat Samant(Kandhamal) from BJD.
