Bhubaneswar, July 17 (Reporter) Several Chhatra Congress workers and senior party leaders were arrested today while attempting to gherao the official residence of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi during the statewide Odisha bandh, called by eight opposition parties over the death of FM College student Soumyashree Bisi.
Chhatra Congress activists, carrying placards and shouting slogans, marched to the Chief Minister's residence blaming the state government for the student’s death.
A scuffle broke out as the agitaters tried to breach the security cordon near the CM’s residence. Police personnel deployed at the site dispersed and chased them away from Lower PMG Square.
Among those detained were Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) President Bhakta Charan Das and AICC Odisha in-charge Ajay Kumar Lallu and former minister Jayadev Jena besides several other leaders.
The Police later cleared MG Road near the CM’s residence.
The dawn-to-dusk Odisha bandh was called by Congress, along with the Samajwadi Party, NCP, RJD, and several Left parties, to demand justice for 20-year-old Soumyashree Bisi, a second-year Integrated B.Ed student of FM (Autonomous) College, Balasore.
Soumyashree succumbed to 90 percent burn injuries on July 14, two days after allegedly attempting self-immolation, following alleged mental and sexual harassment by Assistant Professor Samir Sahu, who has since been arrested and suspended.
Opposition parties demanded a judicial probe into the incident and sought the resignation of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj, accusing them of administrative failure.
Normal life was crippled across Odisha as the bandh began at 6 am.
Educational institutions, shops, and business establishments remained shut, while buses stayed off roads and train services were disrupted due to picketing. Protesters squatted on railway tracks at multiple stations, affecting the movement of nearly 20 short- and long-distance trains.
Congress leaders led by the PCC President and the Odisha Congress incharge took out a bike rally through key junctions in Bhubaneswar to monitor the enforcement of the bandh call.
Protesters also blocked National Highways at various locations, leading to traffic snarls and leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded.
However, emergency and essential services such as hospitals, ambulances, and medicine shops remained exempt from the bandh.
Chhatra Congress and other opposition workers also staged protests outside government offices and banks, demanding swift justice and systemic accountability.
Commissionerate Police set up a helpline (0674-254351) for residents of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack to report any difficulties during the bandh. Police forces were deployed across major locations, and no major untoward incidents were reported till the filing of this report.
Congress leader Ajay Kumar Lallu and PCC President Bhakta Chjaran Das reiterated the party's commitment to continue the agitation until Soumyashree’s family receives justice.
“Our fight for justice will not stop,” they asserted...////...
