New Delhi, Dec 23 (Reporter) A Chennai-based homebuyers association has written to the Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna, urging him to take cognizance of the matter, which has caused severe stress and hardship for homebuyers over the years. The association, representing Unitech homeowners, highlighted the severe financial turmoil and mental agony faced by around 13,000 families due to the unresolved status of Unitech projects. Senior citizens, in particular, have been disproportionately affected, with the delay exacerbating their financial and emotional burden due to their old age. According to the approved resolution plan passed by NCLAT in May this year, Suraksha was expected to resume flat construction within 90 days. However, the association said there are persistent delays. Endorsed during a recent Annual General Body Meeting, the association’s letter underscored that construction progress remains stagnant despite the Supreme Court’s intervention and the formation of a new board for Unitech. The association pointed out that continued delays in court proceedings have hampered significant progress. “As per the current situation, every major step in the building proceedings requires the Supreme Court’s approval, which further prolongs the timeline and leaves homebuyers in a constant state of uncertainty,” the letter stated. The letter also emphasised that the Chennai projects have been neglected for over 12 years, with original construction agreements providing for delay compensation. This provision could have offered some financial relief to the affected buyers. However, the association noted that the apex Court had ruled out delay compensation, depriving homebuyers of financial support and further burdening families who have been paying both EMIs and rent for years without relief. The association called for the Supreme Court’s immediate intervention to expedite the hearing process. The letter expressed concerns about the stalled structures’ safety and urged swift judicial action to prevent further hardship. The association’s plea concluded with a call to restore citizens’ faith in the judicial system. “We look up to the Supreme Court as the beacon of hope for justice, and we believe that your leadership can end this prolonged ordeal. We kindly request you to consider our plea and take necessary steps to accelerate the proceedings, thereby providing much-needed relief to thousands of struggling families.” Despite the Supreme Court's intervention and formation of a new board for Unitech, construction progress remains hampered due to continued delays in court proceedings.
