New Delhi, July 16 (Reporter) The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of two tragic incidents involving the drowning of minor children in Delhi and Greater Noida last week, raising alarm over the evident negligence of public authorities in ensuring basic safety.
In Delhi, a 4-year-old boy tragically lost his life after falling into an open drain in the Mahendra Park area of North-West Delhi. The NHRC noted that various reports suggest that the city has witnessed numerous such fatalities in recent months, with victims succumbing to similar hazards posed by open drains and manholes.
It has issued notices to the Chief Secretary, Police Commissioner, and the Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, seeking detailed reports in the matter within two weeks, said the Commission in a statement issued here today.
In Greater Noida drowning mishap, the NHRC noted that a 6-year-old boy had drowned in a water body in a park. “Reportedly, the residents had already informed the Greater NOIDA Development Authority (GNDA) about waterlogging in the fountain area of the park, where this incident happened, however, no action was taken by the concerned authorities in this regard,” said the Commission.
As part of its inquiry, the NHRC has issued notices to the Chairman of GNDA and the Police Commissioner of Gautam Budh Nagar, demanding an explanation for their inaction within two weeks.
