Brussels, May 12 (Reporter) NATO has no plans to deploy its armed forces in Ukraine, NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoana said.
"[French President Emmanuel] Macron stressed the importance of continuing to provide assistance to Ukraine. And NATO remains interested in supporting Ukraine in all possible ways. But in NATO, where decisions are made by consensus, at the moment there are no plans or political will to station troops on Ukrainian territory. Our support is related to preventing the escalation of the conflict between NATO and Russia," Geoana said during the presentation of his book in the Moldovan city of Arad.
Following a Paris-hosted conference on Ukraine held on February 26, Macron said Western leaders had discussed the possibility of sending troops to Ukraine but did not reach a consensus. Some EU leaders hastened to dismiss such plans, while Macron himself reiterated on several more occasions that the option of sending troops to Ukraine should remain on the table.
Macron also said in an interview with The Economist last week that he did not exclude the possibility of sending troops to Ukraine should Kiev send a request. Moreover, Stephen Bryan, former assistant US deputy secretary of defense, said in an interview with foreign media earlier this month that France had sent soldiers of the Foreign Legion to Ukraine...////...
