Hyderabad, June 18 (Reporter) Bhuvanagiri MP Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy has called for urgent action to safeguard Telangana's rightful share of Godavari waters as per the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act.
Speaking to the media at Gandhi Bhavan here on Wednesday, the MP expressed concern over the construction of the Banakacherla project by the Andhra Pradesh government and questioned the silence of BJP leaders on the matter.
Kiran Kumar Reddy revealed that he had written to Union Jal Shakti Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy on January 22, 2025, regarding the Banakacherla project. He said that Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy met the Jal Shakti Minister in Delhi on June 3 and again on June 13 to raise the issue and ensure Telangana’s interests are protected.
The MP criticised Union Minister G Kishan Reddy for not taking responsibility and questioned the inaction of BJP MPs from Telangana, asking why the party's eight MPs have remained silent on such a critical issue.
“As MPs, it is our duty to speak up for Telangana’s rights over Krishna and Godavari waters,” he asserted, adding that the state, which was formed with aspirations of equitable water, funds, and employment, is now facing a water crisis.
He welcomed Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy’s initiative to convene an all-party MPs’ meeting to deliberate on the Banakacherla project and related concerns.
He urged leaders to attend the meeting, rising above politics, and called upon Union Minister Kishan Reddy to take necessary steps to ensure Telangana does not suffer losses in its share of Godavari waters...////...
