New Delhi, Oct 1 (Reporter) Indian football club Mohun Bagan Super Giant will not travel to Iran for their AFC Champions League Two 2024-25 match against Tractor SC, which was scheduled to be held at the Yadegar Imam Stadium in Tabriz on Wednesday.
The Kolkata-based club cited the ongoing political unrest and security concerns in the region as their reason for cancelling the trip to the Islamic Republic of Iran. The decision has raised uncertainty about the status of the match, with the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) yet to announce whether the fixture will be rescheduled.
The ACL Two, formerly known as the AFC Cup, serves as Asia’s second-tier club competition, ranking just below the AFC Champions League Elite.
Mohun Bagan Super Giant, the Indian Super League 2023-24 Shield winners, were drawn into Group A, which includes Qatar's Al Wakrah SC, Iran's Tractor SC, and Tajikistan's Ravshan Kulob.
In their opening match last month at the Salt Lake Stadium, Mohun Bagan played to a goalless draw against Ravshan Kulob. They currently sit third in the group standings, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the round of 16.
The Kolkata outfit will hope to improve on their previous season's performance in the AFC Cup, where they finished third in their group and missed out on the knockout stage...////...
