New Delhi, July 5 (Reporter) Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, today took a swipe at the Modi government over the ongoing trade negotiations with the United States, alleging that the Prime Minister will “meekly bow” to the pressure from US President Donald Trump's tariff deadline. “Piyush Goyal can beat his chest all he wants, mark my words, Modi will meekly bow to the Trump tariff deadline,” Gandhi wrote on X, targeting the Union Commerce and Industry Minister. Notably, Goyal had reiterated India’s steadfast approach to international trade, stressing that the country negotiates on its own terms and in alignment with national priorities. “India engages in trade discussions based on its own principles. Talks are ongoing with countries such as the EU, New Zealand, Oman, the USA, and Chile. A free trade agreement is only possible when it brings mutual benefit—such agreements must be win-win,” Goyal had told reporters yesterday. Emphasising that India’s national interest will always be paramount in any deal, Goyal said, “We are open to agreements with developed countries, but India never enters into trade deals under pressure or based on deadlines.
