Chandigarh, May 29 (Reporter) Lamenting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has "almost destroyed" all the robust and autonomous institutions in the country except the judiciary, former Union Minister Kapil Sibal on Wednesday accused the PM of lowering the "prestige and dignity" of the high office he holds.
“Our independence and democracy are in grave peril today”, Sibal warned, addressing a media conference here in support of the INDIA bloc candidate from Chamdigarh Manish Tewari.
"It is lamentable that PM Modi has almost destroyed all the robust and autonomous institutions in the country except the judiciary," he said, while accusing Modi of lowering the "prestige and dignity" of the office of the Prime Minister.
He said the type of speeches the Prime Minister has made in the recent past is "simply pathetic" and such a speech will not enhance the reputation of even a block level leader.
The Supreme Court Bar Association president was also critical of the "abuse of laws" like the Prevention of Money Laundering Act and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for "destroying dissent and difference of opinion".
Sibal observed that the Modi government has not encouraged the manufacturing sector, and said that is the root cause of the rising unemployment in the country.
Stating that 59 Per Cent of the country's GDP is contributed by the ‘Service Sector’ and just above16 percent by agriculture and the rest by manufacturing and other sectors, Sibal said the government is more interested in the import of the goods and components, which can be easily manufactured in the country...////...
