Aizawl, Feb 19 (Reporter) In a major crackdown on cross-border drug trafficking, Mizoram Police and Assam Rifles have seized a large quantity of methamphetamine and crystal meth near Zokhawthar village.
The contraband, smuggled from Myanmar’s Chin state, was recovered on Tuesday during a joint operation along the Vaikai area on the banks of the Tiau River, which forms the Mizoram-Myanmar border, police said on Wednesday.
Officials confirmed that the seized drugs included 7.1 kilogrammes of methamphetamine tablets and 3.1 kilogrammes of crystal meth, with an estimated market value of Rs 71.15 crore. The substances were found in possession of Vanlalhruaia (59), a resident of Aizawl, who was immediately taken into custody.
Following his arrest, Vanlalhruaia was handed over to Zokhawthar Police Station, where he was booked under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs & Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985. He was later produced before a district court in Champhai, which remanded him to police custody for 72 hours to facilitate further investigation.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident, the joint team also recovered 50 grams of heroin in Zokhawthar. However, the suspected trafficker managed to evade arrest and is believed to have escaped across the border into Myanmar. The recovered heroin was also handed over to the police for further legal proceedings.
