Aizawl, Apr 12(Reporter) Former Union Minister and senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, on Friday, accused the BJP-led NDA regime headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi of scrapping the Free Movement Regime for its failure to end ethnic strife in Manipur. Interacting with the media in Aizawl, Ramesh said that the central government blamed Myanmar as it could not control violence in Manipur and resorted to the abolition of the FMR. After releasing the manifesto of the Congress party for the coming Parliamentary polls, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary said Manipur ethnic violence began within a year after N. Biren Singh became the state Chief Minister. Prime Minister imposed an undeclared emergency in Manipur but failed to stop the violence for which he blamed Myanmar and ended the FMR. “Modi bluffed the Meiteis, the Nagas, and the Kukis in Manipur which triggered the civil war,” he said, adding that while the British used a ‘divide and rule’ policy, Modi used a ‘bluff and rule’ policy. He said that the Prime Minister has not visited Manipur during the last 11 months and has also not spoken to Manipur Chief Minister and other leaders. Modi spoke about Manipur only for a few minutes, he said. “This is the intention of the RSS which may spill over to other states,” he said. While the BJP is trying to divide the people in the country, the Congress is trying to integrate the people, he claimed. Different cultures, traditions, and religions of the northeastern states are not safe in the hands of the saffron party, he said. Ramesh accused the BJP of having an agenda to introduce One Nation, One Religion, and One Language and of trying to do away with different cultures, traditions, and religions through legislation and implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). He said that the Congress policy is to protect the ways of life of different people. He alleged that while the BJP failed to make inroads into Mizoram and some other states of the region it is using the Mizo National Front (MNF) and the ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) to enter Mizoram. He also accused the ZPM of not having the courage to categorically say that they will not join the NDA. It is extremely important to defeat the saffron party to save democracy, the Constitution, and the minority communities, he said...////...
