Melbourne, Oct 27 (Reporter) Australian head coach Andrew McDonald is eyeing young talent Sam Konstas for the vacant opener's position in the upcoming Test series against India. McDonald’s decision will depend on the coaching staff's evaluation of Konstas as a potential fit for the best XI. The 19-year-old has been making headlines with his impressive performances, notably scoring centuries in both innings of New South Wales’ Sheffield Shield opener against South Australia. He continued to impress with a resilient 43 in the subsequent match against Victoria, establishing himself as a strong contender for the opening role. Although Konstas has yet to don the Australian cap at the international level, he has made a remarkable impact in his early first-class career. He was instrumental in Australia’s victory at the U19 Men's Cricket World Cup 2024, contributing significantly to the team's success. With Steve Smith likely to return to his familiar No. 4 position after testing the waters as an opener following David Warner's retirement, the spot alongside Usman Khawaja at the top of the order remains available. "When we’re assembling a Test team, we focus on the current needs," McDonald explained. "If a younger player fits the bill, we’re prepared to take that step. If we believe Sam is capable of stepping up, then the opponent shouldn’t factor into our decision. Every player must face tough competition eventually." Australia is yet to confirm its squad for the five-match series against India, which kicks off on November 22 in Perth. This series is crucial for the World Test Championship standings, with both Australia and India currently holding the top two spots. However, India's position could change as they are trailing 2-0 in their ongoing series against New Zealand. As the series approaches, the cricketing world will be watching closely to see if McDonald opts to give Konstas his international debut, showcasing the young star's talents on a grand stage...////...
