Manipur providing shelter to Myanmar immigrants: CM

Imphal, May 12 (Reporter) Manipur Chief Minister N Biren said on Sunday the civil war in Myanmar has displaced large number of people and they are entering Manipur illegally. Addressing media here at the CM Secretariat, Biren said about 5,801 illegal Myanmar migrants were detected in Kamjong district alone and 15 of them have died while about 359 have returned to Myanmar. At present there are 5,457 illegal Myanmar immigrants in eight villages of Kamjong and are kept at safe places, he informed. A village local committee is mostly managing accommodation and maintenance with ration provided by district administration, he said. The district administration is providing these immigrants with identity cards and headcount is being done every alternate day, he informed. Although they are keen to go back to Myanmar as cultivation season has started, they are hesitant due to recent bombing by Myanmar army. Until then, all of them will be provided with food and shelter, the CM said. Biren further said that a special police team has been formed to identify new settlements, undertake biometrics of illegal immigrants. He informed that nodal officers (both civil and police) have been appointed in five districts -- Ukhrul, Kamjong, Tengnoupal, Chandel and Churachandpur for the purpose of keeping vigil on influx of illegal immigrants, identify any new settlements and capture biometrics to upload on MHA portal. He said that due to activities of immigrants, Manipur has witnessed abnormal growth of population and destruction of forests, poppy plantation, drug trafficking in Kuki-dominated areas of Churachandpur and Kangpokpi.
