Kolkata, May 22 (Reporter) West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday paid humble tributes to the "Father of Indian Renaissance" Raja Ram Mohan Roy on his birth anniversary. Born on this day in 1772 Raja Ram Mohan Roy 27 September 1833) was the Indian reformer and writer who was one of the founders of the Brahmo Sabha in 1828, the precursor of the Brahmo Samaj, a socio-religious reform movement in the Indian subcontinent, and pioneered to end brutal Sati Daho, a Hindu taboo, during the British Raj. He was dubbed the "Father of Indian Renaissance." and his title Raja was given by Mughal emperor Akbar. Raja Ram Mohan Roy's influence in the fields of politics, public administration, education and religion was all pervasive. He was known for his efforts to abolish the practices of sati and child marriage. The reformer also wrote Gaudiya Vyakaran which was the first complete Bangla grammar written book. " I pay my humble tributes today, on his birthday, to Raja Ram Mohan Roy, the pioneer figure of Indian modernity and the great social reformer," the Bengal CM said in a message. She said Raja Ram Mohan Roy was the first major figure of the Indian Renaissance and a visionary for enlightened and nationalist India.
