Male/New Delhi, Oct 6 (Reporter) Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu has expressed confidence that India will fully support efforts to improve the financial situation of his country that faces an economic crisis, the BBC has reported. The Maldives' foreign exchange reserves dropped to USD 440 million, just enough to cover one and a half months of imports. In an interview with the BBC ahead of his India visit, President Muizzu said he is confident that India will provide assistance as the Maldives faces an economic crisis. He added, "India is very familiar with our financial situation, and as a major development partner, we can rely on them to help ease our burden and find solutions to the challenges we face," President Muizzu said in an email interview with the BBC. Asked about his previous "India Out" campaign before assuming office, President Muizzu explained that any differences between the Maldives and India can be resolved through dialogue. Last month, Moody's global credit rating agency downgraded the Maldives' credit rating, warning that the "default risk is materially high”. However, President Muizzu told the BBC that the Maldives is not facing a sovereign debt default and does not intend to participate in a program with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). "We have our own agenda," he stated. The President is currently on an official visit to India at the invitation of President Droupadi Murmu and is expected to return to the Maldives on Thursday. During the visit, President Dr Muizzu will engage in talks with President Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and other senior Indian officials to discuss ways to further strengthen bilateral relations. This marks President Muizzu’s second official visit to India Meanwhile, according to a report by Adhadhu, the Maldives President travelled to India today on an aircraft from the Indian Defense Ministry. Muizzu left the Male at 12:06 pm on an Indian Defense Research and Development aircraft. A 50-member delegation is accompanying the President, adhadhu reported. The news site, quoting flight tracking website, said the aircraft is operated by the Indian Air Force. Adhadhu has obtained a list of the members participating in the five-day trip. President Muizzu is accompanied by his wife Sajida Mohamed, some ministers, officials of the President's Office, members of the ruling party and journalists. The ministers accompanying the President are Foreign Minister Abdulla Khaleel, Defense Minister Ghassan Maumoon, Home Minister Ali Ihusan, Finance Minister Moosa Zameer, Health Minister Ahmed Nazim, Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed, Attorney General Ahmed Usham, Tourism Minister Ibrahim Faisal, Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen and Construction Minister Abdullah Muththalib. He is also joined by the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) Governor Ahmed Munawar, Vice Chief of Defense Force Ahmed Ghiyas, Senior Chief Spokesperson Heena Waleed and President's Office Communications Minister Ibrahim Khaleel. The ruling People's National Congress (PNC) parliamentary group leader MP Ibrahim Falah is also a member of the delegation. International media earlier reported, citing Indian officials, that the purpose of the visit is to seek financial assistance.
