Mumbai, Mar 4 (Reporter) Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Asim Azmi on Tuesday offered an apology for his remarks praising Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.
He said that his words had been twisted and that he was ready to take back his statement and apologise if sentiments were hurt.
Azmi has released a video on the microblogging platform X. In this video, he said, "My statement has been distorted and presented. I have made the same statement about Aurangzeb Rahmatullah Alayh that historians and writers have presented before us. I have not made any kind of derogatory statement about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj or any other great man."
Azmi's statement about the Mughal ruler Aurangzeb has caused a major uproar in the state's politics and state assembly today.
On the second day of the budget session of the state assembly, the ruling MLAs created a ruckus in the House over Abu Azmi's statement, resulting in adjournment of today's proceedings of the legislature.
Speaking to the media outside the legislature on Monday, MLA Azmi had stated that Aurangzeb was not a cruel administrator, leading to criticism from a several quarters of society.
