Bengaluru, May 30 (Reporter) The release of Kamal Haasan’s film 'Thug Life' faces uncertainty in Karnataka, with the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) announcing it will withhold cooperation unless the actor issues a public apology for his recent remarks deemed offensive to Kannada identity.
The KFCC’s decision could deal a major blow to the commercial prospects of the film in one of southern India’s largest markets. KFCC President NM Suresh said the Chamber would neither facilitate distribution nor screening of Thug Life across the state if Haasan failed to apologise for comments made during a promotional event in Chennai.
“This is not merely about one actor or one film. It is about respecting Karnataka’s language, culture and people. Without an apology, there will be no release of Thug Life in Karnataka,” Suresh told reporters.
Industry observers said the KFCC’s position could complicate the film's nationwide release, particularly given Karnataka’s substantial multiplex presence and box office share. Analysts noted that the southern markets—Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka—collectively determine a film’s success or failure in the first week.
The controversy erupted after Haasan allegedly made remarks perceived as undermining Kannada pride, leading to public outrage and protests by pro-Kannada groups. Social media campaigns under hashtags like #BoycottThugLife have gained traction over the past 48 hours.
There has been no official statement from Haasan’s office till the time of filing this report.
