India’s first Mega Transshipment Container Terminal 'Vizhinjam International Seaport' will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 2. In a message, the Chief Minister said, "Visited the Port of Vizhinjam, a monumental achievement for Kerala, ahead of its inauguration by the Prime Minister on May 2. Witnessed world-class facilities and reviewed operations that rival the best globally. Vizhinjam stands as a proud testament to Kerala’s historic progress over the past nine years." With 265 ships and 5.48 lakh TEUs handled since its commercial launch, the country's first semi-automated transshipment port marks Kerala’s rise on the global maritime trade map. Earlier, the Kerala Cabinet approved a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for an underground railway line linking Vizhinjam Port and Balaramapuram Railway Station.
