Bengaluru, May 2 (Reporter) Karnataka Minister Shivanand Patil on Friday dramatically submitted his resignation from the legislative assembly, but with a caveat attached.
Patil, who represents Basavana Bagevadi in Vijayapura, has requested that his resignation be accepted only if BJP MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal, the current representative of Bijapur City, also steps down.
The resignation comes as part of an escalating political feud between the two prominent Lingayat leaders.
Patil made it clear that he intends to contest the Vijaypura City seat in the event of Yatnal's resignation, a move that would add further fuel to their already bitter rivalry. This feud recently took a sharp turn when Yatnal accused Patil of relying on Muslim votes, even controversially labelling him an "agent of Pakistan."
In a firm response, Patil issued his resignation letter, asserting that his decision was personal and had no bearing on the Congress party or Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
Karnataka Assembly Speaker UT Khader confirmed that Patil’s resignation letter had been received, adding that the matter would be reviewed as per constitutional norms. The resignation, should Yatnal follow suit, could set the stage for a high-stakes by-election in Vijayapura...////...
