Karnataka: Driver stops bus to offer namaz, govt orders probe

Hubballi, Apr 30 (Reporter) The Karnataka government has ordered an enquiry into a viral video showing a driver-cum-conductor of the North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) offering namaz after allegedly halting the bus en route between Hubballi and Haveri on the evening of April 29. Taking serious note of the incident, Transport and Muzrai Minister Ramalinga Reddy on Wednesday said that while every citizen has the right to practise their religion, it is objectionable for public service employees to engage in religious activities during duty hours, especially at the cost of passenger convenience and safety. "The staff working in public service must compulsorily adhere to rules and regulations. Performing namaz by stopping the bus midway while passengers are on board is not acceptable," the minister stated in an official communication. He directed the Managing Director of NWKRTC to initiate an immediate enquiry into the matter and take disciplinary action if the employee is found guilty. He further instructed that necessary measures be implemented to prevent recurrence of such incidents in the future.
