New Delhi, Feb 12 (Reporter) Families of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots on Wednesday welcomed the conviction of former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar saying that "decades later, justice has finally been served".
Hailing the judgment, one of the victims said, "Decades later, I'm overwhelmed with emotion as justice has finally been served. Today, I remember the resilience of my family, the kindness of our neighbour, and the sacrifices made by countless others."
Recalling the horror, Kulpreet Vesuna, who was just 11 at the time said, "I witnessed the devastating Sikh riots that shook our nation. Our family home was burned to ashes, but fortunately, we had temporarily relocated for repairs, sparing our lives."
"A mob descended upon our new residence in Janak Puri's C-2 block, but our brave neighbour, an army personnel, stood guard and protected us. We were eventually relocated to a safe location under custody, as my father was a prime target," she said.
It may be mentioned that a special court in Delhi on Wednesday convicted Sajjan Kumar in the murder of father and son in West Delhi's Raj Nagar.
Judge Kaveri Baweja delivered the verdict convicting the former Congress MP, who is already serving life imprisonment in another case of the 1984 riots.
According to the prosecution, on November one, 1984, a furious mob, led by the former MP, had killed S Jaswant Singh and his son S Tarundeep Singh.
