Tokyo, Jan 18 (Reporter) The Japanese Communist Party (JCP) has appointed Tomoko Tamura as its secretary general, with the 58-year-old becoming the first woman in the party's 102-year history to take up this position, Japanese media reported on Thursday.
Tamura was first elected as deputy in the 2010 elections. She has since been reelected three times and most recently served as the head of the party's political council, the NHK broadcaster reported.
She will succeed Kazuo Shii at the helm of the party after his 23 years in office.
Tamura's appointment comes amid the Japanese Communist Party's intention to "rejuvenate" its image and reach a broader spectrum of voters by shifting away from traditional forms of leadership, the News on Japan website reported.
