New Delhi, June 27 (Reporter) Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh today slammed the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), accusing it of never accepting the Constitution of India and persistently targeting its principal architects, including Dr BR Ambedkar and Jawaharlal Nehru, since 1949.
The Congress reaction came a day after RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale, speaking at an event, demanded removal of the words “socialist” and “secular” from the Preamble, arguing that they were inserted during the Emergency by the then Congress government. Hosabale also demanded an apology from the Congress for imposing Emergency on June 25, 1975.
Jairam Ramesh said on X, “The RSS has NEVER accepted the Constitution of India. It attacked Dr. Ambedkar, Nehru and others involved in its framing from November 30, 1949 onwards. In the RSS’s own words, the Constitution was not inspired by the Manusmriti.”
Ramesh further accused the RSS and its political affiliate, the BJP, of repeatedly advocating for a new Constitution.
“This was Mr Modi’s campaign cry during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The people of India decisively rejected this call. Yet, the demand to alter the basic structure of the Constitution continues to emerge from the RSS ecosystem,” he said.
The Rajya Sabha MP said, "The Chief Justice of India himself delivered a judgment on November 25, 2024 on the issue now being raised by a leading RSS functionary".
