Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani to take over as caretaker foreign minister

Tehran, May 20 (Reporter) The Iranian cabinet on Monday approved the appointment of Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani as caretaker foreign minister following the death of Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in a helicopter crash. The Iranian Government Spokesman Ali Bahadori Jahromi made the announcement on Monday. Bagheri Kani, 56, was serving as Amir-Abdollahian’s deputy for political affairs. He acted as Iran’s chief negotiator for reviving the 2015 nuclear deal, known as the JCPOA, though the talks came to a halt in September 2022, Tehran Times reported. He was also part of the Iranian negotiating team when Saeed Jalili, then secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, was in charge of handling the nuclear talks with the European trio - Germany, Britain and France – and the United States during the presidency of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Iran’s Guardian Council spokesman Hadi Tahan-Nazif said that according to the Constitution, the vice president would take over as interim president. In an interview on Monday, Tahan-Nazif said that with the approval of Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, a council consisting of the Iranian judiciary chief, parliament speaker, and vice president would take measures to hold presidential elections within 50 days.
