IP university adopts 2 villages to develop as ‘smart villages’

New Delhi, July 8 (Reporter) Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University has adopted the villages of Pochanpur and Amberhai in South-West Delhi with the aim of transforming them into ‘smart villages’. The initiative, led by Padma awardee Prof. (Dr.) Mahesh Verma, Vice Chancellor of the university, seeks to ensure holistic development in education, environment, health, training, awareness, skill development, and sports. During a recent visit to these villages, Prof. Verma highlighted the university’s commitment to corporate social responsibility. “The university has a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and will like to take down the classroom information to the neighbouring community for their transformation,” he said. A ‘Jan Sunvai’ session was held, where local MP Kamaljeet Sehrawat and District Magistrate (South West) Lakashya Singhal listened to the villagers' grievances. Singhal, an alumnus of the university, noted that over 170 projects worth Rs 200 crore had recently been approved for the South-West district. He urged villagers to conserve water and avoid encroachments to improve living conditions. Sehrawat praised the government’s efforts to communicate directly with villagers and understand their issues. The local Station House Officer (SHO) promised increased police patrolling to enhance safety in the villages. This initiative follows the university's earlier efforts during its Silver Jubilee Year, when it adopted 25 surrounding villages. Activities included dental and general health camps, and awareness programmes on nutrition, environment, sanitation, cyber security, family welfare, career guidance, and government schemes. Villagers expressed concerns about potable water scarcity, drainage issues, inadequate street lighting, poor road conditions, parking problems, and the presence of liquor shops in public areas.
