Paris, June 2 (Reporter) – In a spectacular showcase of tennis brilliance, Indian player N Sriram Balaji and his Mexican partner Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela Martinez powered into the third round of the French Open men’s doubles event at the storied Stade Roland Garros in Paris on Saturday.
Entering the main draw as alternates, Balaji and Reyes-Varela delivered an impressive performance to outlast the French duo, Dan Added and Theo Arribage. The gripping match, which spanned 1 hour and 42 minutes, concluded with the Indo-Mexican pair triumphing 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
Looking ahead, Balaji and Reyes-Varela might face a formidable challenge against the second-seeded duo of Rohan Bopanna from India and his Australian partner Matthew Ebden, assuming Bopanna and Ebden advance to the third round.
The match began with both pairs locked in a fierce battle, staying neck-and-neck at 3-3 in the first set. However, Balaji and Reyes-Varela found their rhythm, winning the next two games to take a 5-3 lead before closing out the set 6-4.
In the second set, Balaji and Reyes-Varela initially seized control with a 3-1 lead. Yet, the French team, fueled by their home crowd's energy, staged a spirited comeback, winning five consecutive games to take the set 6-3.
In the decisive third set, the score was tied at 2-2 before Balaji and Reyes-Varela showcased their resilience, winning four straight games to secure the match.
Adding to the day's excitement, veteran Indian tennis star Rohan Bopanna faced a rain delay, with his two scheduled matches postponed to Sunday. Bopanna, along with Matthew Ebden, is set to compete against the all-Brazilian team of Orlando Luz and Marcelo Zormann in the first round of the men’s doubles, where they hold the second seed.
Bopanna will also team up with world No. 31 Veronika Kudermetova in the mixed doubles category. Their first-round opponents are Italy’s Andrea Vavassori and Liudmila Samsonova.
