New Delhi, Oct 11 (Reporter) India on Thursday voiced concern over the deterioration in the security situation along the Blue Line in Lebanon after Israeli forces were reported to have fired at UN outposts in southern Lebanon injuring UN peacekeepers.
In a statement, India also said the inviolability of UN premises must be respected and the safety of UN peacekeepers must be ensured.
“We are concerned at the deteriorating security situation along the Blue Line. We continue to monitor the situation closely.
“Inviolability of UN premises must be respected by all, and appropriate measures taken to ensure the safety of UN peacekeepers and the sanctity of their mandate.”
According to reports, Israeli forces fired at an observation post belonging to the UNIFIL peacekeeping force at its main base at Naqoura in southern Lebanon on Friday morning, wounding two people.
This comes after two peacekeepers were injured in a similar incident on Thursday.
On Thursday, two peacekeepers from Indonesia were injured by Israeli fire in southern Lebanon, the UN said.
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), which has some 10,000 peacekeepers, including from India, and is charged with keeping arms and militias out of southern Lebanon, said that Israel Defense Forces (IDF) troops opened fire at three positions held by UN peacekeepers.
“This morning, two peacekeepers were injured after an IDF Merkava tank fired its weapon toward an observation tower at UNIFIL’s headquarters in Naqura, directly hitting it and causing them to fall,” the mission said.
The two peacekeepers were from Indonesia’s contingent and were in good condition after being treated for light injuries, Indonesia Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said in a statement.
Israel says fighters from the Hezbollah terror group have been operating near UN posts.
United Nations peacekeepers were deployed to patrol Lebanon's southern border with Israel in 1978 after Israel invaded south Lebanon.
The mandate for the operation - known as the UN Interim Force in Lebanon or UNIFIL - is renewed annually by the 15-member U.N. Security Council.
The Blue Line is a UN-mapped line separating Lebanon from Israel and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. The area of operations for UN peacekeepers is marked by the Litani River in the north and the Blue Line in the south. The mission has more than 10,000 troops from 50 countries and about 800 civilian staff, according to its website...////...
