Inclement weather continues in J&K with rain & snow

Srinagar, Feb 19 (Reporter) Most of the higher reaches of Kashmir, including the ski resort of Gulmarg, received fresh snow overnight, while the plains were lashed by rain for the second consecutive day, disrupting normal life on Monday. The snowfall and rain led to the closure of the Jammu-Srinagar national highway and the Srinagar-Leh road. Traffic officials said Jammu Srinagar national highway is blocked due to a mudslide at Mehad-Cafeteria, Ramban, and a landslide at Tabela Chamalwass, Banihal. “People are advised to avoid journeys on NH-44 until the weather improves and the road is clear,” a spokesman for the traffic police said. The roads connecting Keran and Machil roads in Kupwara district, Anantnag Sinthan, and Mughal roads were also closed for vehicular traffic due to snowfall on Monday, they said. Meteorological Centre Srinagar said 40 cm of snow were recorded in Gulmarg in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district in the last 24 hours. The resort also received 41.9 mm of rainfall. It has been snowing at Gulmarg, Gurez, Peer Ki Gali, Shopian, and other upper reaches of Jammu and Kashmir since morning. Srinagar and its adjoining areas have received incessant rains since Sunday, resulting in the waterlogging of several low-lying areas and a considerable drop in the daytime temperature. It was continuously raining in Srinagar and its adjoining areas until this report was filed. The Meteorological Centre Srinagar said Srinagar received 12.4mm of rainfall, while Qazigund received 12.8mm of rainfall, Pahalgam 18.6mm of rainfall, Kupwara 42.7mm of rainfall and 2.0cm of snowfall, and Kokernag 8.0mm of rainfall during the past 24 hours. The night temperature improved and was 3-6°C above normal, while the day temperature dropped and was recorded -1 to -3°C below normal at most stations in the Kashmir Valley on the previous day. The Met office said there is a possibility of light to moderate rain and snow at most places (plains and lower reaches), with the possibility of heavy to very heavy snowfall over the middle and higher reaches of Kupwara, Baramulla, Bandipora, Ganderbal, Badgam, and districts of South Kashmir during the next 24 hours. It said on February 21, there is a possibility of intermittent light to moderate snow at many places till the afternoon or late afternoon and gradual improvement thereafter. The minimum temperature during the intervening nights of Sunday and Monday in Srinagar was recorded below 2.4°C, against the normal of 9.9°C. Qazigund had a low of 3.6°C, Kokernag 3.5°C, Pahalgam 0.8°C, Kupwara -0.1.4°C, and Gulmarg -2.8°C on Monday, the MeT office said...////...
