Immigration bill introduced in LS, Opposition claims legislation violates fundamental rights

New Delhi, Mar 11 (Reporter) Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai introduced The Immigration and Foreigners Bill, 2025 in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday amid demands from the Congress and other Opposition parties that the legislation be withdrawn as it violated fundamental rights. The opposition also demanded the bill be referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC)/ Congress member Manish Tewari said the bill "is a violation of our fundamental rights on many counts”. “Either this bill should be withdrawn or should be referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for very careful consideration, because it violates multiple articles of the fundamental rights under the Constitution of India,” he said. He said the provisions of the bill can be potentially misused by any government of the day if it feels that the political views or the ideological beliefs of any individual or conscientious dissenter do not conform to the views of the incumbent establishment. TMC member Saugata Roy also criticised the bill, arguing that its provisions are too stringent for foreigners. He further pointed out the absence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the House. In response, Rai stated that concerns had been raised regarding the legislative competence of the bill. However, he asserted that the bill aligns with the legislative authority and falls within the provisions of the Indian Constitution. He said the bill is not intended to bar any foreigner but rather to ensure adherence to the country's laws. He emphasised that it is the government's duty to safeguard the nation's security, progress, sovereignty and overall safety.
