Rome, Nov 25 (Reporter) The International Criminal Court's arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will not accelerate the peace process in the Middle East, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said on Monday.
"We believe it is a mistake to equate the person who organised the massacre of October 7 with a democratically elected prime minister. I do not think that the arrest warrant for Netanyahu will help accelerate the peace process," Tajani told reporters before the start of the Mediterranean Dialogue forum.
The top diplomat also said that he plans to raise the issue of the ICC warrant at the upcoming meeting of G7 foreign ministers in the town of Fiuggi, which starts on Monday evening.
Tajani emphasised that ICC decisions should be legal, not political. Italy intends to review the ICC documents in order to make a decision with its partners, the minister said.
On October 7, 2023, Israel was subjected to an unprecedented rocket attack from the Gaza Strip. In addition, Hamas fighters infiltrated the border areas, opened fire on the military and civilians and took hostages. Israeli authorities say that about 1,200 people were killed during the raid.
In response, the Israel Defence Forces launched Operation Iron Swords in the Gaza Strip and announced a complete blockade of the enclave. The death toll from the Israeli attacks has surpassed 44,000 in the Gaza Strip, according to local health authorities.
On Thursday, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes in the Gaza Strip. The ICC has rejected Israel's objections to its jurisdiction over these warrants. US President Joe Biden has condemned the ICC's decision to issue the arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Gallant.
The G7 Foreign Ministers will gather on November 25-26 for a second meeting under the Italian presidency. The participants will discuss major regional and global issues, including the situation in the Middle East, the Ukraine conflict, the stability of the Indo-Pacific, and the International Criminal Court's arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Gallant...////...
