Vienna, Aug 12 (Reporter) Although a drone attack occurred on one of the Zaporozhye (also known as Zaporizhzhia) nuclear power plant (ZNPP) nuclear power plant (ZNPP)'s cooling towers, there is no threat to nuclear safety, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi said.
In describing the cooling tower damage, Grossi did not specify who was responsible for the drone strikes on the ZNPP.
Grossi said any military action against the plant clearly violated the five key protection principles set by the UN Security Council in May 2023.
"These reckless attacks endanger nuclear safety at the plant and increase the risk of a nuclear accident. They must stop now," Grossi was quoted as saying by the agency.
The IAEA mission requests immediate access to the cooling tower to evaluate damage, Grossi added.
On Sunday, Russian state-owned atomic energy corporation Rosatom said a ZNPP's cooling tower had been severely damaged by two direct hits from Ukrainian drones. Emergency services extinguished the fire, while specialists will evaluate the risk of structural collapse when conditions allow, it added. According to the station's press office, the fire did not affect the operation of the plant in any way, as all six units of the facility were in a "cold shutdown."
