Shimla, Jan 7 (Reporter) Himachal Pradesh has achieved a significant milestone in road safety, recording a 6.48% decline in road accidents in 2024 compared to the previous year, an official said here on Tuesday.
Data reveals a 6.48% reduction in road accidents compared to the previous year. In 2024, 2,107 road accidents were recorded, down from 2,253 in 2023. The number of fatalities also decreased significantly, with 806 lives lost in 2024 compared to 892 the year before. Similarly, injuries dropped from 3,449 in 2023 to 3,290 in 2024.
Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu attributed this progress to the collaborative efforts of the government, law enforcement agencies, and proactive citizens. “The reduction in accidents and fatalities underscores the commitment of all stakeholders to saving lives on our roads,” he said.
Over the past two years, the State government has implemented a range of measures aimed at improving road safety. These include public awareness campaigns to encourage responsible driving, enhancements to road infrastructure, and targeted safety interventions at accident-prone locations. Additionally, enforcement of traffic laws has been tightened, and emergency response systems have been upgraded to ensure quick medical assistance for accident victims.
This achievement stands out against the national backdrop, where 2023 saw an alarming increase in road accidents across India. Nearly 1.73 lakh deaths and around 4.63 lakh injuries were reported nationwide, amounting to an average of 474 fatalities per day. Official figures for 2024 are yet to be released.
Despite the progress, Chief Minister Sukhu emphasized that the State will not rest on its laurels. “Even one life lost is one too many. We remain committed to further reducing accidents and enhancing road safety,” he said, urging citizens to abide by traffic rules, avoid speeding, and drive responsibly. He stressed that public participation is vital for achieving safer roads.
