Shimla, Aug 30 (Reporter) Leader of Opposition (LOP) Jai Ram Thakur on Friday accused the Himachal Pradesh government of deploying a drone for surveillance over his official residence at Ramchander Chowk in Shimla. Raising the issue during question hour in the Assembly, Thakur said, “Setting such a precedent of snooping on Opposition leaders is highly dangerous." He alleged that the drone was operated from the residence of the Superintendent of Police (SP), Shimla, nearby. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu refuted Thakur’s allegations, suggesting that if surveillance were occurring it might be the handiwork of central agencies like the Enforcement Directorate (ED) or the Central Bureau of Investigation, not the state government. He assured that the government would probe the matter. Thakur earlier stated that a drone was seen flying over his residence multiple times, unethically capturing images of his windows, doors, and the surrounding area. He asserted that the drone's origin was traced to the SP’s residence, adding that a Chief Parliamentary Secretary (CPS) also resides nearby. "It is not just drone surveillance; my phone has been tapped, and during recent political turmoil, police personnel were stationed outside my residence, interrogating visitors," Thakur alleged. He criticized the government for its lack of control over law and order while focusing on surveillance on Opposition leaders. In response, Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania assured the Assembly that he would personally look into the matter and urged the treasury benches not to intervene. The Speaker also clarified that BJP members did not walk out during the Chief Minister's response but were merely protesting without clearly stating their reasons.
