Shimla, Mar 5 (Reporter) The High Court of Himachal Pradesh held a Full Court Reference to mourn the passing of Justice V K Gupta, former Chief Justice of the court.
Justice Gupta passed away on February 15, 2025, after a prolonged illness at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi.
Born on September 10, 1947, Justice Gupta pursued law at Delhi University and began his legal career in 1970.
He served as Advocate General of Jammu & Kashmir before being elevated as a High Court judge at the age of 43.
Over his distinguished career, he served in the High Courts of Jammu & Kashmir, Calcutta, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.
Notably, he was the first Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court in 2000.
He served as Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court from March 2003 to February 2008 and was later transferred to Uttarakhand, where he retired in 2009.
Chief Justice G S Sandhawalia highlighted Justice Gupta’s contributions to judicial infrastructure and computerization in Himachal Pradesh.
He played a key role in completing the High Court’s new building and modernizing the judiciary. Known for his expertise in constitutional, service and civil law, he was also deeply involved in public interest litigation.
Judges, senior advocates, and court officials attended the condolence meeting, observing two minutes of silence. Advocate General Anoop Rattan, Bar Association President Peeyush Verma, and other dignitaries paid their respects, acknowledging Justice Gupta’s invaluable contributions to the judiciary...////...
