Visakhapatnam, Feb 4 (Reporter) Any fears of Joe Root's unavailability for the remaining duration of the Visakhapatnam Test were quashed by his teammate James Anderson here on Sunday.
"His finger is not great. He took a blow in training this morning and again on the field. It's just making sure that is as good as it can be for when he bats," Anderson said.
"Hopefully tomorrow he'll turn up on the ground and be okay to hold a bat.
"He was just making sure he could do everything he could to help us out in the second innings, just making sure it's as good as possible for tomorrow. There's a chance we will need him with the bat so it's making sure he can hold a bat.”
In the 13th over of India’s second innings, Anderson induced an edge from Shreyas Iyer. It fell short of Root at the slip and the fielder sustained a blow to his right little finger. Root went back for treatment and didn’t return for the rest of India’s session.
Root, who comes in at number four, wasn’t needed to bat today as England lost only one wicket by the end of the day’s play.
Anderson added there was no reason for Root to stay on the field during India’s innings after the blow, as that might’ve aggravated his injury.
"I don't think there's any concern. It's making sure he's as good as he can be. There's no point risking it for an external blow, no point risking it further out in the middle, so it's making sure he's good enough to bat."
Given the injury is external, Root can come in anytime for England on Monday.
Anderson was critical of India's approach in the third innings, stating that the batting side looked nervous. India batted at a run rate of 3.24 in the innings.
"I think the nerves were there to see today. The way they batted, I think they didn't know how many was enough. They were quite cautious, even when they had a big lead."
He also added that England were quite confident about going for the target of 399.
"The chat last night from the coach was that even if they got 600 ahead we would still go for it. It's very clear to everyone how we will try to do it. I know there are 180 overs left in the game but we will try to do it in 60 or 70."
After taking a lead of 143 in the first innings, India scored 255 in their second assay to set England a target of 399. The visitors were 67/1 at the end of the day’s play, with Zak Crawley (29) and Rehan Ahmed (9) at the crease...////...
