Chandigarh, Oct 5 (Reporter) Long queues of voters could be seen outside polling booths in Haryana early on Saturday as 9.53 percent voting was registered during the first two hours till 9 am in the multi-cornered electoral battle to pick a new 90-seat Assembly, officials said.
According to the Election Commission office, voting remained largely peaceful in the initial hours. "There has been no report of any untoward incident or malfunctioning of the electronic voting machine from anywhere," said an official.
Till 9 am, district-wise voting data indicated that Jind district recorded the highest voting at 12.71 percent, and Panchkula had the lowest voting at 4.08 percent, officials said.
In the first two hours of polling, 11.87 percent voting was recorded in Ambala, 9.72 percent in Bhiwani, 9.08 percent in Charkhi Dadri, 8.82 percent in Faridabad, 11.81 percent in Fatehabad, 6.10 percent in Gurugram, 8.49 percent in Hisar, 8.43 percent in Jhajjar, 9.54 percent in Kaithal, 11.10 percent in Karnal, 10.57 percent in Kurukshetra, 11.51 percent in Mahendragarh, 10.64 percent in Mewat, 12.54 percent in Palwal, 7.49 percent in Panipat, 9.27 percent in Rewari, 10.76 percent in Rohtak, 9.87 percent in Sirsa, 7.98 percent in Sonipat and 9.27 percent in Yamunanagar district.
In the first two hours of polling in the state, the highest voting of 15 percent was recorded on the Garhi Sampla-Kiloi seat, and the lowest voting of 4.20 percent was recorded on the Badshahpur seat.
Haryana Chief Electoral Officer Pankaj Aggarwal said that out of the 2.04 crore registered voters, 1.07 crore are men, 95.78 lakh are women, and 467 are transgender voters. 5.25 lakh young voters aged 18 to 19 years and 1.49 lakh Divyang voters who are voting for the first time will also exercise their franchise.
Apart from this, there are 2.31 lakh voters above 85 years of age and 8,821 voters above 100 years of age. The total number of working voters is 1.09 lakh.
Haryana Chief Minister Naib Singh Saini of the BJP, after casting his vote, said, "Our government is coming."
Before casting his vote, the Chief Minister offered prayers at Gurudwara Sahib.
He said that to celebrate the great festival of democracy with enthusiasm, people must cast their vote in the interest of the nation and the state.
Former Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar reached his polling booth in Karnal at 7 am to cast his vote. During this, he claimed victory and said that the BJP will get more seats than the election result of 2014.
CEO Agarwal said that a total of 1,031 candidates are in the fray, including 930 men and 101 women. Among these candidates, 464 independent candidates are also trying their luck.
This time the main contest in the elections is likely to be between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the main opposition party Congress, although the Jannayak Janata Party-Azad Samaj Party alliance, the Indian National Lok Dal-Bahujan Samaj Party alliance, and the Aam Aadmi Party are also in the fray.
Key battles are expected seats like Ladwa in Kurukshetra from where Chief Minister Saini is contesting; Garhi Sampla Kiloi seat from where former Chief Minister Bhupendra Singh Hooda is in the fray; Jind's Uchana Kalan seat from where former Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala is contesting and Jind's Julana seat from where Congress has fielded wrestler Vinesh Phogat, said an official.
Apart from this, Savitri Jindal from Hisar is contesting as an independent and not on a BJP ticket.
In Sirsa district's Dabwali, three members of the Chautala family, Amit Sihag (Congress), Aditya Chautala (INLD), and Digvijay Chautala (JJP), are facing each other.
In Bhiwani's Tosham, BJP's Shruti Chaudhary is contesting against her cousin Anirudh Chaudhary and in Ambala Cantt former home minister Anil Vij is going facing a tough challenge from Congress rebel Chitra Sarwara. Surprisingly, Chitra's father, former minister Nirmal Singh, is contesting as a Congress candidate from Ambala City.
